(Romantic chocolates)

Chocolates you give to someone you love romantically.

(Obligation chocolates)

Chocolates you give to someone you work with or you interact with often. In Japan it is an expectation for women to give chocolates on Valentine’s Day.

(Friends chocolates)

Chocolates you give to your friends to show appreciation. Usually girls exchange chocolates with each other.

(Family chocolates)

Chocolates you give to your family to show appreciation. Usually girls and women in a family give chocolates to their close relatives.

(Treat yourself chocolates)

Chocolates you buy to treat yourself.

(Reverse chocolates)

Chocolates men give to women. In Japan, usually a woman gives chocolate to a man, so if a man does it, it is “reverse”.

In the United States, Valentine’s Day is commonly celebrated among classmates in elementary schools with a small party. The main traditions are card giving and craft making. Students make a mailbox to put on top of their desks. Students have to include all of their classmates and put a card in every mailbox. Usually parents buy a box of classroom cards featuring their child’s favorite character. Some students might make their own cards or include candy or stickers with their cards. With the teacher’s permission, some students might even bring homemade cupcakes or brownies to share with everyone. Many teachers also help students make a card or other craft to take home to their parents.
