「影・陰」は英語で？
今回は「かげ」を表す shadow, shade, silhouette の使い分け・ニュアンスの違いを見ていきます。
日本語でも「影」と「陰」で区別するように、ちょっとした違いがあります。
shadow は「光が遮られてできる形や模様」

“shadow” が意味する影は、光が遮られることによって生じるものの形や模様です。
そのできた像や形、模様に注目しています。
例文
- The object cast a shadow over his face.
（彼の顔に影を落とす。） - The monster jumped out from the shadows.
（モンスターは影から現れた。） - The small rabbit was hiding in the shadows.
（小さなウサギは影に隠れていた。）
また、”shadow” は動詞としても使われ「ついていく、尾行する」という意味も持ちます。
例文
- It is common for student teachers to shadow a veteran teacher for several weeks before earning their degree.
（教育実習生にとって、単位を取る前に、数週間ベテランの先生につくのはよくあることだ。） - You’ll be shadowing one of our experienced employees for two weeks.
（2週間経験豊富な従業員の1人についていってもらいます。） - The police shadowed the suspect for several days and did not discover any suspicious behavior.
（警察は数日間容疑者を尾行したが、怪しい行動を見つけられなかった。）
shade は「光が当たらない部分」

“shade” が意味する陰は、光が遮られることによって見えなくなった暗い部分のことです。
“shadow” が形に注目していたのに対し、”shade” は光の差し込まない部分・範囲に注目しています。
例文
- Let’s sit under that tree to get some shade from the sun.
（木陰に座ろう。） - It’s a good idea to wear sunscreen at the beach, even if you have an umbrella for shade.
（(光を遮るための)日傘があったとしても、ビーチで日焼け止めを塗るのは大事だ。） - She lifted her hand over her eyes to shade them from the sun.
（太陽の光を遮るため、彼女は手で目を覆った。）
“shade” は “shady” という形で、形容詞としても使われます。
「陰になっている」という意味を表すほか、そこから派生して「不正直な、いかがわしい」という意味にもなります。
例文
- There’s a shady spot under that tree, so let’s eat over there.
（木の下に陰になっている部分があるから、そこで食べよう。） - I heard that company is involved in some shady business practices.
（その会社はいかがわしいビジネスに関与していると聞いた。） - There’s a shady-looking person in the alley.
（通りに怪しい見た目の人がいる。） - She’s really shady and will say bad things about you.
（彼女は怪しくて、あなたの悪いところばかり言うと思う。）
Silhouette は「いわゆる影絵」

“silhouette” はいわゆる影絵で、輪郭の中が塗りつぶされたものを指します。光によってその形が黒く浮かびあがってできたものです。
“shadow” と同じく形に注目していますが、違いは、”silhouette” はその物自体が影となっていることです。
例文
- I took a photo of the silhouette of the statue against the sky.
（空をバックに像のシルエットの写真を撮った。） - Silhouette portraits became popular in the 18th century.
（シルエットポートレート（影絵）は18世紀に有名になった。） - The popular street artist Banksy uses silhouette-style images in his artwork.
（有名なストリートアーティストのバンクシーは、作品に影絵を用いる。）
